Komandare

A portable Windows development sandbox — use kRun to inject Cygwin, Bash, and toolchains into any IDE.
One folder makes reinstalling Windows or moving your dev environment much easier.

The Core Idea: Bring the Environment to Your Tools

kRun: Inject the Environment

kRun code . boots Komandare first, then launches VS Code or any IDE with its PATH, toolchain variables, caches, and modules.

Zero Host Pollution

npm / pnpm / pip / playwright / Go module caches, Gradle user dirs, Ruby gems — everything stays inside the Komandare tree. Delete the folder and the host looks untouched.

Portable: One Directory Tree

Paths are anchored to the tree itself. Move it to another drive or machine and the toolchains, caches, and settings come with it.

AI Shell · NL to Commands

aishell — describe what you need in natural language and get a shell command, executed after a RUN confirmation. Works in Chinese and English.

Cygwin + Bash Toolchain

A complete Unix userland, Bash, /kbin, apt-cyg, and optional Node, Python, Go, PHP, and Ruby modules share one booted environment.

AI Shell — Natural Language, Straight to Commands

aishell turns a sentence of Chinese or English into one runnable shell command. Describe it, confirm with RUN, and it executes. Endpoint & model are configured in Config/AIShell.ini.

Quick Start

Launch kmd

Double-click kmd.exe. Prefers Windows Terminal; falls back to the bundled ConEmu.

First Boot

The first launch opens the kmd-welcome full-screen TUI wizard to pick and install modules.

Manage Modules

kmod-setup install python3x — add or remove toolchains anytime.

Take It Anywhere

Copy the whole tree anywhere; kInitrd.cmd re-anchors all paths automatically.

DIY — Build Your Own Modules

1Drop It In

Toss any portable software into Module/<name>/ — the folder name is the module name. A module is just a folder; no manifest needed.

2Register

kmod-setup install <name> generates a Config/Init.d/NN-<name>.cmd loader; the module joins PATH on next boot.

3Pack & Share

kmod-setup export <name> produces a .kmp package (a zip with kmp.ini + loader.cmd + module/) — send it to anyone to install.

4Distribute & Update

kmod-setup mirror switches download sources; users run kmod-setup install -r <name> to pull from the registry, and kmod-setup update checks remote versions with sha256 verification.

You can also hand-write loaders — NN-*.cmd files under Config/Init.d/ run in 00–99 order at boot; module env vars, junctions and cache dirs all belong there. It is the standard way to extend Komandare.

Windows Installer

NSIS installer bundling the full base runtime (Unixlike + Config + Binary + launchers); modules are installed on demand.

Module packages (.kmp) and the module index (registry.kp) are also published on Releases, pulled automatically by kmod-setup after install.

Source & Docs

Launcher C source (kmd.c), build scripts (build-release.ps1 / build_kmd.py) and the project logo.

The full distro tree is large (~3 GB) and maintained through the installer's module system — it never enters this repo.
